Sado, a Japanese tea ceremony.
Experience the serene tradition of Japanese sado, the art of tea, in a demonstration that celebrates the subtle changes of each season Nov. 16 at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens in Delray Beach.
The Japanese tea ceremony is far more than preparing and drinking tea; it is a practice imbued with centuries-old values that invite participants to embrace harmony, respect, purity and tranquility. Each of the sado principles — harmony (wa), reverence (kei), purity (sei) and tranquility (jaku) — serves as a guiding tenet, not only for performing the ceremony, but also for finding peace and presence in daily life.
The ceremony, lasting 35 to 40 minutes, will be held at noon, 1:30 and 3 in the Morikami Theater.
Tickets are $5 with paid museum admission and can be purchased online at morikami.org/product/sado-tea-demo-ticket until 3 p.m. Friday or at the theater door Saturday.
Observing or participating in sado encourages mindfulness and awareness of each moment and detail, from the placement of the utensils to the delicate choreography of movements. The environment is curated to enhance the experience, with each element of the tearoom reflecting simplicity and natural beauty. The tea master’s movements are designed to bring guests into a lasting state of calm and appreciation.
