Wellington Regional earns national sepsis certification

Wellington Regional Medical Center has earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for sepsis certification, recognizing the hospital’s commitment to high-quality, evidence-based care for patients with sepsis.

The certification follows a rigorous, unannounced review this year. Joint Commission reviewers evaluated compliance with certification standards related to program management, early identification and treatment protocols, and the coordination of clinical care. The review included on-site observations and interviews with hospital staff and leadership.

“Sepsis certification recognizes health care organizations committed to striving for excellence and fostering continuous improvement in patient safety and quality of care,” says Ken Grubbs, the executive vice president of accreditation and certification operations and chief nursing officer for The Joint Commission. “We commend Wellington Regional Medical Center for using The Joint Commission certification process to reduce variation in clinical processes and strengthen its clinical program to drive safer, higher-quality and more compassionate care.”

Hospital officials said the certification reflects ongoing efforts to improve outcomes for patients with sepsis, a life-threatening condition caused by the body’s extreme response to an infection.

“We are proud to receive sepsis certification, which reflects our team;s dedication to delivering timely, evidence-based care for patients facing life-threatening infections,” hospital CEO Pam Tahan says. “This achievement highlights the collaboration of our physicians, nurses and clinical teams, who work diligently to identify sepsis early, initiate rapid treatment and improve outcomes for our patients.”

To earn the certification, Wellington Regional implemented standardized protocols for the early recognition and treatment of sepsis, strengthened collaboration among clinical staff, and expanded ongoing education and performance improvement initiatives. The program emphasizes rapid response, adherence to clinical guidelines and continuous monitoring.
