Jamal Lake joins Mandel Public Library to commemorate 100th anniversary of Black History Month

As Black History Month marks its 100th anniversary, Mandel Public Library of West Palm Beach is commemorating the centennial with a monthlong slate of free programs designed to engage adults, teens, children and families. Held throughout February, the lineup reflects a century of national efforts to recognize and celebrate African American history, while creating community connection in West Palm Beach.
Teen Art Club for Homeschool Teens
Thursday, Feb. 12, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Homeschool teens can explore creativity during a Teen Art Club session inspired by the work of artist Alma Thomas. The program takes place in TeenSource on the second floor.
Second Friday Book Club Celebrates Black History Month
Friday, Feb. 13, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The library’s Second Friday Book Club will meet virtually via Zoom to discuss Harlem Rhapsody by Victoria Christopher Murray, offering participants an opportunity for shared conversation and reflection.
KidSpace Kitchen with Ganache Bakery
Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2 to 3 p.m.
Children can bake and decorate themed treats with Jamal Lake of Ganache Bakery, a Food Network Holiday Baking star. The hands-on activity takes place in KidSpace, with in-person sign-up required.
Teens Make Treats with Ganache Bakery
Wednesday, Feb. 18, 3:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Immediately following the children’s session, teens in grades 6–12 are invited to their own baking and decorating workshop with Jamal Lake. This program also requires in-person sign-up and will be held in KidSpace.
Movie Marathon Celebrates Black History Month
Saturday, Feb. 21, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
A full day of films honoring Black history and culture will be shown in KidSpace, offering families and children an immersive, educational viewing experience.
Hip Hop for Kids Presents African Dance
Saturday, Feb. 21, 2 to 3 p.m.
Kids can celebrate Black History Month through movement with an African dance–inspired hip hop class designed to introduce cultural expression through dance.
Family Book Club Celebration: One Crazy Summer
Monday, Feb. 23, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Families are invited to read and discuss One Crazy Summer during this interactive book club program in KidSpace. Registration is required.
Teen Trivia: Superheroes and Super Villains
Saturday, Feb. 28, 2 to 3 p.m.
The month concludes with a trivia competition focused on Black superheroes and villains. The program takes place in TeenSource, with a prize awarded to the winner.
Black History Month Grab & Go Giveaway
Throughout February during library hours
Throughout the month, teens in grades 6–12 can stop by KidSpace to pick up a free young adult book written by a Black author, while supplies last.
