The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens will host a hands-on Adult Calligraphy Workshop Jan. 10, giving participants the opportunity to learn traditional Japanese brush techniques and create their own finished artwork to take home.

Two sessions will be offered, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 3:30 p.m. The workshop costs $40 per person, and advance registration is required.

During the class, participants will learn foundational brush strokes using sumi ink and a traditional calligraphy brush to write Japanese characters. After practicing on paper, each participant will complete a final piece on a shikishi board, a decorative backing traditionally used for calligraphy and artwork.

The program is part of Morikami’s broader mission to preserve and share Japanese culture in Palm Beach County. Located at 4000 Morikami Park Road in Delray Beach, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens honors the region’s century-old connection to Japan through the Yamato Colony, a Japanese farming settlement established in 1903 by Jo Sakai and the Florida East Coast Railway in what is now northern Boca Raton.
