The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens will usher in the New Year with a special Koto New Year Concert on Sunday, Jan. 4, offering visitors an opportunity to experience one of Japan’s most traditional musical art forms.
Concerts are scheduled for noon and 2:30 p.m. and will feature performances by Morikami’s intermediate students on the koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument first introduced to Japan from China during the 7th and 8th centuries.
The performances are designed to celebrate the New Year while highlighting classical Japanese music traditions. The concert is $5 with paid museum admission.
Located at 4000 Morikami Park Road in Delray Beach, the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens' permanent collection includes more than 7,000 Japanese art objects and artifacts, ranging from tea ceremony items and textiles to fine art and historical works. The site also honors the legacy of the Yamato Colony, a Japanese farming settlement that once existed in the Delray Beach area.
The Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens are open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The on-site Cornell Café serves lunch and light fare from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Admission is $18.07 for adults, $16.07 for seniors and military with valid ID, $14.07 for students with ID, and $12.07 for children ages 6 to 17. Children 5 and under are admitted free, and Morikami members receive free admission.
