Residents interested in learning more about law enforcement and public safety are invited to apply for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Citizens Law Enforcement Academy, a free six-week educational program beginning July 15.
Hosted by PBSO District 8 in Wellington, the academy offers participants an inside look at the many divisions and specialized units that make up the sheriff's office.
Classes will be held each Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m., July 15 through Aug. 19, at the Village of Wellington Community Center, 12150 Forest Hill Blvd.
The Citizens Law Enforcement Academy is designed to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the community.
Participants will hear directly from deputies and subject matter experts while exploring a variety of public safety topics, including the Gang and Homicide Unit, Financial Crimes and Human Trafficking investigations, Florida traffic laws, Marine Unit, K-9 Unit and Aviation Unit.
One of the program's highlights is a "Shoot/Don't Shoot" simulation, an interactive training exercise that gives participants insight into the split-second decisions law enforcement officers must make in critical situations.
The academy is open to individuals ages 16 and older. Enrollment is limited to the first 45 participants, with preference given to Wellington residents before applications are opened to those living outside the village.
The program is offered at no cost, and refreshments and snacks will be provided during each session. Background checks will be conducted on all applicants prior to acceptance.
The registration deadline is Wednesday, July 8.
For more information or to register, contact Rosalind Murray, community relations coordinator for the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Countywide Services Division, at 561-485-2432.
