The Western Ride returns to Wellington to support victims of domestic violence

Hundreds of cyclists are expected to take to the roads of Wellington and the surrounding western communities Oct. 18 for The Western Ride, an annual cycling event that combines recreation and community involvement with support for families seeking freedom from domestic violence.

Beginning at Wellington Village Hall, 12300 Forest Hill Blvd., the ride offers 15-, 30- and 60-mile routes to accommodate a range of cycling experience and fitness levels. Wellington describes The Western Ride as the largest organized cycling event in the western communities.

Held during Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the event benefits Donnah’s Fund and Women in Distress, with proceeds supporting domestic violence education and providing assistance to survivors and their families. Donnah’s Fund helps victims establish safe, independent households, including assistance with housing costs, deposits, furnishings and other needs.

The fund was established in memory of a woman who was killed by her husband in 1995. Organizers say her story underscores a reality of domestic violence that is not always visible to friends, relatives and others outside a relationship.

The Western Ride organizers are anticipating more than 300 riders for this year’s event.

Safety and rider support are central to the event. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office will lead the ride, and support-and-gear, or SAG, assistance will be available along the routes, including mechanical help for cyclists who have problems. Riders will find snacks along the course, as well as food before and after the ride. Post-ride activities will include prizes and raffles.

The three distances have staggered starts. The 60-mile route begins at 7 a.m., followed by the 30-mile ride at 7:10 a.m. and the 15-mile ride at 7:20 a.m.

The event has become a recurring part of Wellington’s October calendar. In 2025, organizers publicly thanked Wellington, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and event sponsors for supporting the ride.

This year’s ride is the morning after Wellington’s Fall Festival on Oct. 17 at Village Park.

Advance registration for The Western Ride is $65, with day-of-event registration listed at $75. Online registration closes at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17. Riders also can donate to Donnah’s Fund through the registration site. Volunteers can register at no cost.
