The Village of Wellington officially unveiled six new courts at the Wellington Tennis Center on May 7, marking a major expansion of public tennis facilities.

Village officials, residents and members of the local tennis community gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrating the completion of the project, which was supported in part by a $200,000 grant from the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program.

The expansion adds six courts to the Wellington Tennis Center — three hard courts and three clay courts — significantly increasing playing capacity and programming opportunities.

According to village officials, the additions will help accommodate increased demand for social play during peak hours, expand lesson availability, support larger youth and adult programs, and allow the center to host larger tournaments and special events.

The new hard courts are also expected to provide additional training opportunities for junior players preparing for surface-specific tournaments and school tennis competition.

“The addition of three clay courts and three new hard courts allow all our residents more play opportunities and makes the Wellington Tennis Center the ideal place for juniors and aspiring champions to train,” said Chuck Gill, director of tennis at the Wellington Tennis Center and president of USTA Florida.

The Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program, administered through the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, provides competitive grants to local governments for the development and improvement of public outdoor recreational facilities.

Village leaders said the grant funding helped make the project possible while supporting Wellington’s long-term vision for expanding public recreation access.

“This investment is not just in facilities, but in connection, growth and opportunity for our community,” said Michael J. Napoleone, mayor of Wellington. “We’re proud to celebrate the addition of six new courts and the possibilities they bring.”

Napoleone also credited the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection for supporting the village’s vision for the future of tennis programming in Wellington.

Attendees at the ribbon-cutting ceremony included Maria S. Antuña, council members Amanda Silvestri, Stephen A. Levin and Johnny Meier, along with Village Manager Jim Barnes and Wellington Tennis Center Supervisor James Smith.
