A major philanthropic investment is accelerating plans to expand science education opportunities as the Cox Science Center and Aquarium announced a $10 million gift from longtime residents and philanthropists Judy Lauder and the late Leonard Lauder.

The contribution marks the Lauders’ second significant investment in the center’s capital campaign, following a $5 million gift in 2023. The funding will support the development of the centerpiece of the expansion, the Judy and Leonard Lauder Hall of Science.

“The Cox Science Center and Aquarium is such a dynamic and exciting place for children and people of all ages,” Judy Lauder says. “With the naming of this new building, I feel enormous gratitude for all that the center has planned for future generations to learn about science in engaging and creative ways.”

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2027, the 75,000-square-foot Hall of Science will feature four immersive galleries, including an aquarium, a STEAM Studio, a traveling exhibit hall and a digital exhibit gallery. Plans also include a café and four classrooms, designed to enhance hands-on learning and community engagement.

Leonard Lauder, who served as chairman emeritus of The Estée Lauder Companies, was widely recognized for his philanthropic contributions to education and the arts.

Reflecting on his own experiences, he once described museums as transformative spaces that inspire curiosity and lifelong learning.

Located at 4801 Dreher Trail North, the Cox Science Center remains open during construction and continues to offer interactive exhibits, an outdoor science trail and daily live science shows at the Cox Amphitheater. The expansion is part of a broader capital campaign launched in 2021, with construction beginning in May 2024.

Officials say the new Hall of Science will play a central role in expanding access to science education while creating a modern, immersive experience for visitors of all ages.
