Discover The Palm Beaches, Palm Beach County’s official tourism marketing organization, has opened nominations for the 34th annual Providencia Award. This prestigious recognition celebrates a local business, organization, or individual whose contributions enhance the success of The Palm Beaches as a leading visitor destination. Nominations are now being accepted online through Feb. 27.
As one of The Palm Beaches’ cornerstone industries, tourism remains a powerful driver of economic growth, generating $11.3 billion annually.
“The Providencia Award recognizes the champions that elevate our destination and make The Palm Beaches an exceptional place to visit," says Milton Segarra, CEO of Discover The Palm Beaches. "This award honors leaders and organizations whose dedication drives our tourism industry forward.”
The Providencia Award draws its name from the Providencia, a Spanish vessel that went down off the Palm Beach coast in the 1880s. After the shipwreck, its cargo of 20,000 coconuts from Trinidad was recovered and distributed to local residents, who planted them throughout the area. Over time, those plantings transformed the shoreline into the palm-lined landscape that would come to define, and ultimately name, The Palm Beaches.
After nominations are reviewed by the Providencia Committee, the committee will identify three finalists. The public will then have the opportunity to vote online between March 23 and April 17. The recipient of the 34th Providencia Award will be revealed at Discover the Palm Beaches’ Travel Rally Day this spring, held as part of National Travel & Tourism Week.
Notable past recipients of the Providencia Award include the Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Rick Rose, The Colony Hotel Palm Beach, Equestrian Sport Productions, Loggerhead Marinelife Center, Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society, Lion Country Safari, The Honda Classic, Morikami Museum & Japanese Gardens, SunFest, Flagler Museum, The Breakers Palm Beach, Chris Evert and Burt Reynolds.
Discover The Palm Beaches promotes Palm Beach County as a premier travel destination and represents 39 distinct cities and towns along Florida’s southeast coast, from Boca Raton north to Jupiter. Additional information about The Palm Beaches is available at ThePalmBeaches.com.
