The Norton Museum of Art hosts its annual gala Feb. 7 celebrating the opening of "Art and Life in Rembrandt's Time: Masterpieces from the Leiden Collection," one of the most significant exhibitions of Dutch Golden Age painting ever presented in the United States.
The black-tie event, beginning at 6:30 p.m., will honor philanthropist Ronnie Heyman and contemporary artist Loie Hollowell. The evening will feature cocktails, dinner, dancing and a live auction conducted in partnership with Sotheby's.
The exhibition at the center of the celebration brings together 75 works from the Leiden Collection, widely regarded as one of the world's premier private holdings of 17th-century Dutch art. The show represents the largest assembly of privately owned Dutch paintings from this period ever organized in the country, offering an unprecedented opportunity to view masterworks by Rembrandt van Rijn alongside paintings by his contemporaries and students.
The Leiden Collection, assembled over decades by American collector Thomas S. Kaplan and his wife, Daphne Recanati Kaplan, focuses on the Dutch Golden Age, a period of remarkable artistic innovation that flourished in the Netherlands during the 1600s. The collection includes works by masters such as Rembrandt, Jan Lievens, Gerrit Dou, and Frans van Mieris, among others.
Rembrandt, who lived from 1606 to 1669, is considered one of the greatest painters in European art history, renowned for his innovative use of light and shadow, psychological depth and technical mastery.
The Norton Museum's gala has become one of Palm Beach County's premier cultural events, annually drawing collectors, philanthropists, and art enthusiasts to support the museum's exhibitions and educational programming.
The Norton Museum of Art is located at 1450 South Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach.
