Residents across Palm Beach County will have an opportunity to safely dispose of unused and expired medications during the upcoming DEA National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 25.

The local effort, coordinated by the Palm Beach County Behavioral Health Coalition in partnership with community agencies, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at select Walgreens locations throughout the county.

Organizers say the initiative is designed to provide a safe and convenient way for residents to remove potentially dangerous medications from their homes, helping to prevent misuse, accidental exposure and environmental harm.

The event is part of a nationwide campaign led by the Drug Enforcement Administration. Locally, Palm Beach County Behavioral Health Coalition reports collecting an average of nearly 300 pounds of medications annually through Take Back Day events.

Public health experts point to unused prescription drugs—particularly opioids—as a significant factor in substance misuse. Proper disposal also plays an environmental role. Flushing medications or discarding them in household trash can lead to contamination of waterways and landfills, posing risks to wildlife and water quality.

In addition to Take Back Day, Palm Beach County maintains more than 50 year-round medication disposal sites, accessible through PBCDrop.org. The county also continues to expand access to naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication.

Free naloxone kits are available through iSaveFL.com, a statewide initiative aimed at reducing overdose deaths.

Collection sites will be available at the following locations:

  • Belle Glade: Walgreens, 101 N. Main St.

  • Boynton Beach: Walgreens, 1601 S. Congress Ave.

  • Lantana: Walgreens, 6558 S. Lantana Road

  • Wellington: Walgreens, 10420 Forest Hill Blvd.

Community organizations are also invited to participate by hosting resource tables at event locations.
