The Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival is bringing its first production of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear” to Jupiter and Royal Palm Beach this month.
King Lear is one of William Shakespeare's most profound and tragic plays, exploring themes of power, betrayal, and madness.
The Shakespeare by the Sea XXXIV production of “King Lear” will take place at the Seabreeze Amphitheatre in Carlin Park, 750 South Florida A1A, Jupiter, on July 12, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20 and 21. The Shakespeare by the Palms IV encore production, presented by the Village of Royal Palm Beach, will take place at the Commons Park Amphitheatre, 11600 Poinciana Blvd., Royal Palm Beach, from July 25 to 28.
The show runs from 8 to 10 p.m., with gates opening at 6:30. The event is free, but a $5 donation is suggested. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnic baskets; food and alcohol are permitted.
The play is suitable for all ages, so children are welcome, as are well-behaved and leashed pets.
In the event of light rain, the show will continue; if weather becomes hazardous for the performers or equipment, attendees will be asked to shelter in their cars.
The Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival started as a small production in collaboration with the Chamber Theatre of the Palm Beaches and Young Audiences of Palm Beach County in 1988. These early successes led to the establishment of the Palm Beach Shakespeare Festival, Inc. in January 1990.
