The Village of Wellington has received national recognition as a bronze-level Bicycle Friendly Community from the League of American Bicyclists. This award positions Wellington among over 400 communities nationwide dedicated to enhancing bicycling conditions for residents.

The Bicycle Friendly Community award acknowledges Wellington's investments in bicycle infrastructure, education, policies, and programs that foster both transportation and recreation. Village leaders emphasize that this designation reflects their commitment to quality of life, public health, and sustainability.

“Becoming a Bicycle Friendly Community is about creating an environment where everyone feels safe and confident biking,” says Village Manager Jim Barnes. “This recognition highlights our commitment to healthier lifestyles and community engagement.”

The League’s Bicycle Friendly America program evaluates communities on factors like bike lanes, multi-use paths, bike education, and encouragement programs. Communities must renew their designation every four years to ensure ongoing progress.

Village officials view the bronze designation as a starting point. “This milestone is just the beginning,” said Tim Stillings, Planning, Zoning, and Building Director. “We aim to increase education, expand infrastructure, and engage with residents to enhance biking standards in Wellington.”

This round of awards included 79 new and renewing recipients, bringing the total to 444 recognized communities across all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

“Building better places to bike is a shared effort,” said Bill Nesper, executive director of the League of American Bicyclists. “Communities recognized here are part of a national movement to support bicycling as a valuable mode of transportation.”
