Delray Beach Police Chief Russ Mager retired after 29 years with the city, closing a law enforcement career marked by innovation, leadership and a commitment to community trust.

Mager officially stepped down Monday, June 16.

“It has been an absolute honor to serve alongside such a dedicated and courageous group of individuals,” Mager said. “I’m incredibly proud of what we accomplished together, and I know you will continue to do great things.”

Under his leadership, the department prioritized modernization, expanded officer training and strengthened relationships between law enforcement and the community. Mager was known for a collaborative leadership style and emphasis on accountability and service — principles that guided many of the department’s initiatives.

“Chief Russ Mager has been a dedicated public servant and an integral part of the Delray Beach Police Department for nearly 30 years,” City Manager Terrence R. Moore said.

Assistant Chief Darrell Hunter has been appointed interim police chief to oversee operations during the department’s leadership transition.

His background includes leadership roles in the Community Patrol Division, Community Response Task Force and Investigative Division.

“I am honored to step into this role and continue to serve the community I’ve worked to protect for so many years,” Hunter said. “I look forward to working alongside our dedicated officers to ensure the safety and well-being of Delray Beach residents.”
